Vote Green Party!
There's no denying it any longer: The corporate agenda dominates what goes on in Illinois government, not the agenda of the people. Huge corporate and special interest campaign contributions to both Republican and Democratic state legislators unduly influence the laws that get written and how they’re enforced. And because of this:
- Decent paying jobs are leaving Illinois.
- Access to good health care is vanishing.
- Lower and middle income folks are unfairly taxed.
- Affordable high quality education is disappearing.
- Electric bills are going through the roof.
- Gas and oil prices have been soaring.
- Polluted water and air are making us all sick.
- The food supply is contaminated.
We know these things are happening. But why are they happening to the hard-working people of the 115th District? Because that’s the way things naturally happen? No! They’re happening because of corporate greed, and corrupt, dishonest, and disinterested state government.
The Green Party is an independent political party dedicated to serving the needs of the people and the natural world. Therefore, it does not, and will not, take corporate money. Neither will Charlie Howe!
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
- Create good-paying “stay put” jobs that won’t run away to foreign lands. How? Start by rebuilding Illinois’s infrastructure — waterways, bridges, roads, public buildings, and schools. Support small businesses with grants, loans, and tax breaks.
- Raise the minimum wage. You can’t raise a family on $6.50 an hour. Require anybody doing business with the state to pay a “living wage,” say at least 25% more than the federal poverty level plus health benefits.
- Establish a “single payer” health care system for everybody. Nearly two million Illinoisans have no health insurance at all, and increasing numbers of the middle class can’t afford full coverage. Universal health care works everywhere else in the industrialized world.
- Enact House Bill 750 into law. It’s a fair tax that “swaps” too high property taxes for slightly higher personal income taxes that the majority of Illinoisans pay. In the process, most people would have more cash left in their pockets, and funding for rural and downstate schools would increase by thousands of dollars per pupil.
- Stop air and water pollution from fossil fuels by switching to renewable energy sources like wind and solar power, and biomass, hydroelectric, geothermal, and coal gasification technologies. Plans to finance and build these sustainable, clean energy technologies already exist.
- End our addiction to oil by switching to hybrid-fueled vehicles and building a mass transit system for both cities and rural areas. High speed and light rail electric trains can move people and materials faster, cheaper, and cleaner than cars and big trucks powered by polluting and costly oil-burning internal combustion engines.
- Protect our food supply and the environment by ending corporate control of agriculture with its dependence on petroleum-based fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, antibiotics, and genetically modified crops. Support the organic and family farmer by providing tax breaks and low-interest loans.
